The Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Gambling

Online casino advantages and disadvantages are numerous, subtle and at odds with one another. Advantages seem to combine with reason for the popularity of online casinos. A player on the right online casino can play at any time day or night without having to leave their home. A live casino player must drive or fly somewhere else to be able to play. This advantage weighs heavily in the online versus live casino comparisons. The availability of casinos on your computer is a hard advantage to easily give up by a player. This could be a disadvantage if the player has no self-control where losing is concerned. Advantages, on pure luck games like slots, are you can play at anytime and there is no disadvantage Table games like roulette, Baccarat, Blackjack and craps also offer a neutral arena to play the games in. Video poker games are self-contained and play the same online as they do in a live casino. Online you can play any of these games when you feel like playing. The one caveat is craps where there is no table excitement when the table gets warm. Dice players will miss this extra help when rolling for a hard four.

Poker online is greatest, as the number of hands that can be played in an hour is far greater than a live game. This is an advantage if you want to play a lot of hands. The big disadvantage that seasoned poker players miss is being able to read the body language of the opponents. This one factor can hurt a player who can read other players and their hands. You cannot read a player online very well. It is only an uneducated guess on the player’s part. There are no-tale tell signs online like there are at a live table. A player’s eyes can often give them away when playing a superior hand or bluffing. This is missing when playing online poker.

The algorithm that runs the poker shuffling is suspect on many sites, as aces seem to show more than they should. They definitely come up more than you see in any live cash game. Another part of live poker that is missing from online is long winning rushes. In a live game it is not unusual to see a winning rush last four or six hours. The rush online will be lucky to go four hands.

Slot games online can be set at higher payout percentages as the expense to run an online casino is far less than a live casino. Also new games can be quickly put in play, as the game is only an image and an algorithm. Multiline games online can be played very quickly and the casino gets more plays per hour. This usually favors the casino. Live casinos generate true excitement, which is not seen online. Excitement is contagious and begets a positive atmosphere to play in for the players. This winning setting is helpful to playing better and being more inclined to bet more. Playing in a winning environment is a better place to wager hard earned money. This advantage goes to live play.

Online play saves travel expense and room and food payouts. This gives the player a potentially bigger bankroll to play with. Most online casinos have bonuses for loyal customers and players. Again this raises the betting stake for the online player. Online sites have matured and become high rolling promoters of their sites. Their online progressive slots have developed very large jackpots.

A player can sit at home and take a shot for a few plays at millions.

Online sites can run many different types of tournaments, as space is not a factor. This has become more commonplace among all online sites. The number of freeroll tournaments seems to be growing every year on poker sites. There are limits to what a cash game can offer as space is usually at a premium.

An online site can offer freerolls throughout the day and still run the regular assortment of poker games and at many limits, which opens the site to play from all levels of customers.

Special promotions are easier to advertise online as the players are already coming to the casino website. The opening page can have a banner headline and announce any special occasion the casino wants to push. It does not matter whether it is coming up in a week or a month. Online casinos can pull it off by advertising on their own website. A live casino would have to spend money to let the public know of an upcoming special.

Online casinos have the advantage of convenience that helps to get more of their players to return over and over. The returns also have smaller windows of time between each return to play.

Conclusions

Over all the advantages of online play out way the disadvantages that a player experiences. Only poker has some serious drawbacks and those do not seem to slow down the growth of Internet poker. In fact Internet poker has been responsible for the amazing growth of Holdem on the Net. Other casino games are not bothered at all by online play, and in fact a player may do better since they can concentrate better online. There is no noise or hubbub in the background. The background noise can be soothing music or a TV playing on low sound. Many players play and watch a TV show at the same time.

There is little doubt that online play will continue and when the USA gets a handle on its prohibition against Internet banking, the growth will sky rocket again. Right now the USA rules are an irritant more than anything else to Internet players.

The answer to the beginning question is the scale is tipped to advantages. There are a few disadvantages, but nothing that will hinder the growth of online play.

So come in and play, the online casinos are coming up roses and still growing.

Land Casinos Vs. Online Casinos

Since the emergence of a few online casinos in 1996, the growth and popularity of the online gambling industry has skyrocketed at a phenomenal rate. There are currently thousands of online casinos generating an estimated annual revenue of over USD $7,000,000,000. If this figure is divided by 365 days, then it could be said that online casinos generate an average of well over $19,000,000 in revenue every single day.

As the global internet population continues to grow, and with internet gambling expanding into numerous non-English speaking countries in Europe and Asia, it is safe to assume that the above figures will continue to grow with no immediate signs of slowing down in the near future.

In many cases, compared to a traditional land based casino, an online casino has many advantages which have contributed to its overall growth, popularity and success.

Multilingual: Most of the popular online casinos offer multiple language support, so a person who does not understand English is still able to gamble and enjoy oneself without having to worry about language and communication difficulties. Some of the languages offered at online casinos include: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish.

Currencies: Unlike a land casino, many online casinos accept multiple currencies so that two or more persons are able to play the same game using their own currencies. A person living in Italy can purchase credit in Euro while a person living in the United States can purchase credit in USD. This removes the inconvenience and confusion of having to firstly convert an unfamiliar currency to one’s own currency before placing each bet.

Real Money: Online gamblers play with real money, and as a result they are more acutely aware of the value of their money as opposed to one who plays with a stack of multi-coloured casino chips which don’t seem to have as much of an immediate value. Unlike a land casino where chips don’t seem to have as much value as real money, thus encouraging the player to gamble away more money, an online casino displays the exact amount of money in a player’s account and as a result encourages the player to take his/her money more seriously and not lose track of the value of his/her money.

Dress code: Online casinos don’t have dress codes. One can play in a business suit, dress, underwear, or naked. Thus one does not have to worry about choosing what to wear and dress according to one’s social environment or weather forecast. Being able to wear whatever one chooses gives the player a greater sense of comfort and convenience.

Food and Drinks: Unlike land casinos which enforce certain eating and drinking rules, an online casino player does not have to worry about what he/she can or cannot eat and drink during a game. Thus an online gambler may play with greasy fingers while drinking from a bottle of whisky without an objections from the casino.

Smoking: Whether the player is a compulsive, chronic smoker or a non-smoker who cannot bear the smell of cigarettes, one sets his/her own environmental conditions and does not have to worry about the environmental preferences of other players.

Free Casino Chips: In an effort to attract players, numerous online casinos offer players free casino money to play with. Free online casino bonuses can range from $10 to $2400. Offering potential players free no-deposit or match-play casino bonuses presents a tremendous incentive for players to register real player accounts with these online casinos.

Less Expensive: If the land casino is located in another city, then the gambler would need to take into account transport, accommodation and meal costs, while a person living near a casino would have to take into account transport costs. Depending on how far away from the land casino the player is living, these costs can run into thousands of dollars, whereas an online player can gamble from virtually any computer with an internet connection.

Player Support: Online casinos usually offer better customer service in the sense that they may usually be contacted via telephone, fax, live 24/7 live chat support and email. In addition to this, they provide the player with detailed instructions on how to play each game, whereas a land based casino does not usually provide the player instructions on how to play the games.

Privacy: The sense of privacy available via online casinos greatly exceeds the sense of privacy offered by land based casinos in the sense that online casinos do not take photographs or film footage of players. One is able to enjoy the games without having to worry about what the photographic records or video footage will be used for. In addition to this, one is able to play at an online casino without the knowledge of any other person who is not a casino employee.

Safety: In many cases, it is actually safer for a person to play at an online casino than at a land based casino because the risk of the player being assaulted or robbed greatly decreases when one plays from the safety of one’s home. This not only applies to persons who win large amounts of money in the presence of other people, but also to persons who attend casinos with cash money to play with.

Weather: One does not have to worry about the weather conditions or how to dress for it when playing from the comfort of one’s own home. There is no need to worry about the wet and slippery road conditions when it’s raining or taking an hour long trip to the casino on a hot summer day.

Ill Health: Whether the player is suffering from back pain or diarrhea and as a result is unable to attend the land casino, or whether he/she is simply trying to avoid catching the flu from other persons, ill health does not appear to represent a significant obstacle to those who wish to gamble online.

Less Distractions: Land casinos usually have more distractions which aim to decrease the player’s focus on the game and separate the player from his/her money. Some of the distractions which land casinos utilise include glamorous flashing lights, machine sounds, free alcohol, large mirrors, the absence of wall clocks, windows or any indicators of time so that the player will lose track of time and spend more time in the casino. Unlike land casinos, online casinos do not utilise such distractions.

Play for Free: Online casinos offer players the opportunity to play the casino games for free. Thus one is able to practice and get a feel for the casino games before deciding if and whether to play for real money. Land casinos do not offer such an option and expect all players to play for real money with no opportunity to practice for free.

Relaxed Atmosphere: An online betting session is usually much more relaxed with no time limit or pressure to perform, compared to land casino betting. An online casino player may play a game at his/her own pace without having to quickly make his/her move because he/she is worried about the dealer or other players rushing him along.

Anywhere at Anytime: Online casinos may be played from anywhere at anytime. Whether the player is playing at 2.00 a.m. or 2.00 p.m., from the comfort of one’s one home, or from a laptop inside a camping tent, online casinos may be accessed from any computer with an internet connection, anytime during the day or night.

Shyness: Internet gambling seems to appeal a great deal to persons who are very shy and do not wish to interact with strangers in a land casino.

Equal treatment: Whether the player is wealthy or not, male or female, young or old, Asian or American, online casinos do not discriminate against or show special favor to specific groups of players. Every player is valued and treated equally without having to feel inferior because he/she is betting $50 when another player is betting $5000. It would be difficult to imagine a Hollywood celebrity and the average Joe receiving the same type of treatment from a land based casino.

Better Payouts: Online casinos don’t need to employ dealers, buy gaming tables and slot machines, purchase a casino building, manage a bar and restaurant, hire security guards, etc, and as a result they usually have much lower overhead costs and better payouts than land casinos.

Due to the above-mentioned set of reasons, it is not very difficult to understand why online casinos have proven to be so popular among gamblers from all walks of life.

Famous Gamblers Past and Present

One of the first famous gamblers in the world was John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich. He led a scandalous private life and was addicted to gambling. In 1762, he sat for over 24 hours at a gaming table in his home, refusing to attend meals. In desperation, a servant offered the Earl a piece of salted beef as food; the Earl suggested that the beef be encased between two slices of bread so that he could eat it in his hand at the table. This is where the sandwich got its name.

One of the West’s most famous gamblers was “Doc” Holliday, who maintained a fierce reputation as a hard drinker, tough fighter and ruthless killer. He is chiefly remembered for fighting alongside Wyatt Earp at the famous gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

“Wild Bill” Hickok was another American legend, renowned throughout the world for the tall tales surrounding his violent life. He’s chiefly remembered for taming two of the most lawless towns in Kansas. Unfortunately, Hickok made many enemies and his day of judgment came at a poker table. He was shot in the back of the head by an assassin and died clutching a pair of aces and a pair of eights; ever since, this particular hand has been known as the ‘Dead Man’s’ hand for obvious reasons!

Benny Binion was born in 1904 and lived his life as a bootlegger and conman. At the age of 43, he gave up his life of crime and moved to Las Vegas, where he later opened his own casino. Binion was the gambler’s gambler, and in the 1970s he bought and marketed the World Series of Poker tournament, which has grown over time to be the biggest in the world.

Magazine owner Kerry Packer made his name through his family’s media empire, which owns 60% of all magazines in Australia. Packer became known as a high-stakes gambler when he won $26 million playing blackjack at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. However, Packer has not always been successful; he lost $16.5 million at the Crockfords casino in London, although this barely dented his $8 billion fortune.

The World Series of Poker tournament has created many famous gamblers of today. One such example is Johnny Chan, nicknamed “The Great Wall of China” after his amazing success winning the World Championships in 1987 and 1988 consecutively. He’s played in all the major games of the last two decades and is also known as a genuinely nice guy.

Drinking and Gambling

Drinking and gambling is a subject that has many opinions depending on how a player handles their booze. Most expert gamblers separate the two actions from each other on purpose. A single glass of wine or a beer is not going to interfere with most people’s play, but a steady stream of highballs could have a drastic effect coupled with a loosing streak. The problem is the liquor helps to remove fear and makes some people feel invincible. This could work to the player’s advantage if the dice table is hot or the cards are running over the player. This feeling of power which drinks give some people is dangerous when the play is not running hot. Mistakes in the amount bet or running parlays to the max can play havoc with a player’s gambling stake. A clear and sober mind is an asset for most gamblers trying to read the nuances of the trend. A person who is drinking to excess can see a trend where none exist.

There are all kinds of stories about how a gambler won a great deal of money while drunker than a sailor on liberty. They may be true, but think about what happens in any major casino. The house gives away drinks to patrons who are gambling. Why do you think they are being so kind to the players? Casinos know that drinking takes away inhibitions and the lack of control may make some players bet more than they would if not drinking. This free drink policy can backfire if the player gets hot, but over time the free drinks work in favor of the house.

The decision that a player needs to make is an individual one and should be based on the player’s own experience. Some poker players can drink like fish and their cards never get drunk. Others have a few drinks and their hands are bet like they are all winners when obviously that is not the case. Drinking players have a tendency to try to bluff more often than they should. Drinking players also are willing to call bets when the only way they can win is to make a miracle draw.

Watch the play in poker of any player who is putting them down at a steady pace.

If their play gets wilder as they drink, they are either going to kill the table of players or have a very bad night from their own drink influenced play.

To drink and play or to not to, that is the question.

U.S. Casino History

Posted by: Admin  :  Category: Uncategorized

By A. Awwad

The casino in the United States has a long and often illustrious history. Gambling plays a part in American history from the beginning of the colonies, in the lore of the Wild West, in the history of the underground bars during prohibition, and more. Laws concerning gambling have changed over time, with growing prohibitions against gambling followed by a relaxing of laws.

Attitudes toward gambling varied in the early American colonies. Puritan-founded colonies, not surprisingly, disapproved most strongly of all forms of dice, cards and gaming. Colonies founded by the English were quite tolerant of gambling, and it was treated as an innocent pastime. By the early 1800’s, gambling, and even gaming houses, or casinos, had evolved in the newly founded United States. New Orleans, in particular, was a center for gambling, and casinos and saloons in New Orleans evolved games we still link with the old west, including poker and blackjack.

During the California gold rush, gambling was both legal and widespread, as government offices regulated and licensed the saloon and the casino. Faro, bluff, and dice games were popular. While New Orleans had been the gambling capital of America forty years earlier, San Francisco replaced it as the main site for gambling and casinos due to the free flowing gold of the California gold rush.

During the period between the late 1850’s and early 1900’s, California progressively criminalized gambling. It remained legal in Nevada until 1910; however, the casino never reached the glory in Nevada that it had in San Francisco. Gambling was also criminalized elsewhere in the country during this period. Needless to say, gambling did continue, but it was a phenomenon kept behind closed doors. During the era when gambling was widely illegal, casinos remained in operation in speakeasies, private clubs, and more.

Gambling once again began to be legalized in 1931, starting with Nevada. During the 1930’s, some 21 states legalized racetrack gambling. Gambling continued in Nevada, and with low stakes bingo elsewhere. Casinos began to spring up in Atlantic City, NJ in the late 70’s. In 1987, the Supreme Court made a fundamental decision allowing gambling on Native American reservations, and in the years since, casino gambling has spread throughout the country with modern and thriving casinos in many states. Riverboat casinos began to spring up on major rivers in many states during the same period, bringing gambling full circle to its early roots with riverboat gamblers on the mighty Mississippi in the early 1800’s.

Casino Gambling – The Choices

Casino gambling isn’t just a few poker games with a roulette wheel thrown in for good measure; your casino offers many different games with a variety of stakes. For the frugal among us, the nickel slot machines are a very good bet. You can spend an entire evening gambling with as little as five dollars and still enjoy the thrills of hitting a jackpot. The quarter slots are more popular, but if you have more to spend, this kind of gambling may be right up your alley. Some people do nothing in their favorite casino except play the slots.

For the card player, casino gambling offers blackjack and poker as main attractions. Casinos vary these games depending on the house rules. Some tables have lower stakes but use more decks to keep the game interesting, other gambling houses feature higher stakes games with one or only a couple of card decks in play. Make sure you know the house rules on subjects like table etiquette and gambling limits before you play. Some houses are very particular about when it’s ok to touch cards, and what’s considered a forfeit. For example, many casinos won’t recognize a hand if any card touches the discard pile. Knowing these details will come in handy when you’re ready to gamble.

The roulette wheel is another kind of gambling altogether. This classic game, along with the dice tables, can be confusing for a newcomer. The best thing to do if you are unfamiliar with any game is to watch and ask questions before putting gambling any money. The casino staff is trained to help you and nobody will think you’re foolish for learning the rules before you put down any cash.

Casino gambling may also include video poker, games of skill and electronic dice games. Once you’ve learned the ins and outs of these games, you may find them as exhilarating as the old-fashioned versions of blackjack, craps and poker. As always, know your limits, go to have fun and enjoy your casino experience!

Calculating Poker Odds

Posted by: Admin  :  Category: Uncategorized

By A. Awwad

When it comes to calculating poker odds, math is your best friend. For those of you who aren’t handy with algebra, you do have the option of simply memorizing the odds for different hands. If you want to be a great poker player, however, and are able to handle anything that comes at you without a moment’s hesitation, then learning a little bit of the algebra behind calculating poker odds is the best thing you can do.

Hand Odds

The chance of you making a particular hand in poker. Example: If you have two spades in your hand and there are two spades on the flop, then your hand odds for getting that flush are 2:1. For every 3 times that this hand comes up for you, you will get your flush once. If the odds are 3:1 then you would get your hand once every four times it came around.

To calculate hand odds, use the following formula:

X to 1 odds = you get your hand once every (X + 1) times

OR

X to 1 odds = 1/ (X + 1) = % chance of getting your hand

This translates to, for example:

3 to 1 odds = 1/ 4 = 25% chance of getting your hand

Here are your odds of hitting an out by the river:

Outs Flop% Turn% Flop Odds Turn Odds Draw Type
2 8% 4% 12 22 Pocket Pair – Set
3 13% 7% 7 14 Single Overcard Draw
4 17% 9% 5 10 Gut Shot, Two Pair – Full House
5 20% 11% 4 8 One Pair – Two Pair or Set
6 24% 13% 3.2 6.7 No Pair – Pair, Two Overcard

Draw
7 28% 15% 2.6 5.6 Set – Full House
8 32% 17% 2.2 4.7 Open Straight Draw
9 35% 19% 1.9 4.1 Flush Draw, Open+Backdoor

Draw
10 38% 22% 1.6 3.6
11 42% 24% 1.4 3.2
12 45% 26% 1.2 2.8 Flush+Gut Draw
13 48% 28% 1.1 2.5
14 51% 30% 0.95 2.3
15 54% 33% 0.85 2.1 Flush+Open Draw
16 57% 34% 0.75 1.9 Flush+Open+One Overcard
17 60% 37% 0.66 1.7

How many outs does your hand have? This is your first consideration. Outs are the cards in the deck that help you create a hand. There are thirteen cards in each suit. If you hold two of them and two more are on the flop, then you have nine outs to get your flush.

These are just the beginning considerations for hand odds in poker. Your adventure in calculating poker odds has only just begun!
